May '23 Promo - Things in motion

After many many years of being a stubborn child, pontificating from the highest soap boxes that photographers should not do video I…changed my mind. It might have been the allure of higher rates, new toys or just the fact that almost every client expected some sort of vertical motion element, regardless I caved. And I’m glad I did. It’s a lot of fun! I was leaving money on the table to prove a point no one asked me to, or needed.

We’re all fighting to keep our viewer engaged for more than the 0.5 seconds it takes to swipe and this so far seems like good technique to do so. I get most of my inspiration from music videos as they seem to align most with the pill size story a shoot usually has. It’s important to remember I’m not shooting Citizen Cane. Not yet anyway. These subjects don’t have an arch, they don’t grow and change - how can they? The whole thing is usually over in less than 10 seconds. Ergo the music videos. So here’s a small demo of what I’ve done so far:

New work:

I shot the new campaign for Danskin and maaan was it a doozy! It was a heavy lift but we made it work. It was photo, video and some polaroids as well. Running through 3 cameras on a loop gave me a bit of a brain melt but we got her done! Here’s a few examples:

We got to play with some colors for this really dope PONY drop. Not a sneaker guy as you could tell by my 5yo ripped converse but these look very cool.

Starter was a fun one too. Got to break out the polaroid I got from this kid in Germany that retrofitted a Instax Square to fit on a Mamyia RZ. This is all very nerdy stuff but trust me - it’s super cool and awesome. Let me explain - it used to cost me $10 to shoot one polaroid (expired) and now it’s $1. See? Cool! Anyway here’s some things:

And finally some fun stuff I shot with Brooke - we got to keep each other company for 4 days of ecom. Nothing against ecom its just that it can get a bit monotonous. So to break out of it we’d shoot some fun stuff during lunch. On day 4 we turned her into Nurse Ratched - to get an idea of how delirious we got. Billy (@cut2kill) , an amazing co-conspirator, did the hair.

And I guess that brings us to today - I’m taking full advantage of this freelance life to be outside at Gab’s on a Tuesday coffee in one hand, croissant in the other being very nostalgic about Europe as I’m in between breaks from reading “Vând kilometri” a book by Romanian photographer Mihai Barbu. He got on his bike and traveled all the way to Mongolia all by himself. The wonderlust that’s hitting me is only matched by my nostalgia. I wish I could share it with you guys but it’s in romanian so unless you wanna score some major points on Duolingo just take my word for it.

Cheers!
